Thorne Smith Newsletter
February 15, 2014
Hello

Thank you for being a loyal reader of the Thorne Smith Newsletter!!!

There's two Thorne Smith movies coming up quick on TCM, plus 3 other gems you'll enjoy, a free audio download of THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY and we have a very special anniversary to salute, so let's get to it!

Issue 009 February 2014

ON THE TUBE

If you've never checked out the Thorne Smith Channel on YouTube you may not have seen the fun short film Turner Classic Movies is airing for us February 15th Saturday night/Sunday morning of February 16: It's called MENU

I know, it's a strange name for a movie. But MENU was written by Thorne Smith during his time at MGM, this 1933 short film stars Una Merkel and Franklin Pangborn. TCM is airing this little gem at 1:42am EST, which means 10:42pm TONIGHT for you folks on the west coast. It's going to be on right after THE DIVORCEE but before THE LOVE PARADE starts. It's only a 10 minute movie so it often doesn't show up in your cable guide at all.

On Sunday, February 16 at 10:00am EST (7:00am for us in the west) TCM is showing THE THIN MAN (1934).

TCM brings us two more treats on Wednesday, February 19. At 8:00pm EST (5:00pm PST) you can catch the restored version of TOPPER (1937) which I've raved about many times in this newsletter.

Following that you can get more Cary Grant screwball fun with Irene Dunne in THE AWFUL TRUTH (1937) which airs later that night at 12:15am (9:15pm PST).

Last but not least, on Tuesday, February 25 at 8:00am EST (5:00am EST) you can see THE GHOST AND MRS MUIR (1947) starring Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison. I'm looking forward to this one because in some ways it reminds me of elements in Thorne Smith's serious novel DREAM'S END.

A SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY TO CELEBRATE

Have you read the novel TOPPER by Thorne Smith? A lot of folks have seen the movie but maybe they haven't read the book. But in either case, at some point this month you should take a moment to raise a glass of your favorite beverage to salute the 88th anniversary of TOPPER being published by Robert McBride & Company. Officially the birthday was February 13, 1926. The world has been a much better place with TOPPER in it.

GET A FREE AUDIO OF THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY

Do you love audiobooks? If so, you're in for a treat!

As I mentioned last month the folks at Audible.com are giving away a free download of Ben Stiller reading the original short story of THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY.

Just click this link below Free Audio of Secret Life of Walter Mitty

The link will open up a new page showing the Free audio to download. On the right side of the page it'll say "Get it for free" and you just click on that dark gray box. It'll ask you to log-in to get it.

Now, if you don't have an Audible.com account, you can log-in with your Amazon.com account info if you want. Or you can sign up to get a free Audible account to try for 30 days. It's that simple. Just wanted you to know about it so you can grab your free audio download before they come to their senses and stop giving it away.

If you have any trouble getting the download or even signing up for a free account so you can get it, send me an email at thornesmithexpert@gmail.com and I'll be glad to help you out.
